Safety is Not Created in Numbers, Nor Anything Else

Holy mother-lovin' buckets.  I haven't posted in three weeks!  It doesn't seem like that long, but it is and I seriously apologize.  Thank you to those of you who reminded me I need to write something, even if it's crap. I'm not being sarcastic either - I've got a million and one blog ideas floating around the great abyss known as Jen's-Amazonian-Brain.  For serious.  I do.  I just need to find some time to get it from brain to keyboard to computer screen and finally to the great blog-o-sphere.  Suggestions on how to do this?  I mean, I'm not even a parent and I don't have time.  Gah.

Anyhow, this one is about numbers and math.  I severely dislike both. Never been good at either.  Aside from the three weeks of neglect, take for example, that tomorrow in our Longhorn City at 9 AM we are supposed to be at 28-degrees Fahrenheit. However, yes that's a HUGE however, with the wind chill, it's going to feel like 17-degrees Fahrenheit.  Right now, I hear it's 2-degrees in Chicago.  So, no, I should not be complaining, but I still don't have to like it.  Tomorrow night is supposed to be record setting.  Of course, in the wrong direction - low 20's. . . I can't even think about it without my brain hurting.  Wait. . . I think something burst. . . erm. . . froze. . . anyone know a doctor?

Ha!

And to continue on my rant on horrible, irresponsible numbers, let's just say I've been running my arse off for the past few months.  Some of you may know this and some of you may not, but suffice it to say that while I've been run-eng and run-eng I noticed a slight change in being a lot less curvaceous.  Hurrah!  Finally.  Right?  Right!  Wrong!  NOT ON THE SCALE I DON'T. I weigh exactly the same as I did when I started this marathon training adventure.  So, so, so not fair.  It's been almost 3-months.  My minimum run is 5-miles and my long run is up to 12-miles. I run 4-5 times a week and throw in a low-impact cardio for good measure once per week.  I also watch what I eat. For real.  So, when does that atrocious, ugly, corrupt, villainous, malevolent, hateful, unpleasant, wicked, and heinously evil Beelzebub device formally known as the "scale" start recognizing my hard work?

See?  I don't like numbers.  Never did.  Never will.

The end.

Take some comfort in the fact that a lb of muscle takes up only 1/3 the mass/volume of fat, so you've probably burned off a ton of fat and more importantly built up muscle!

Aren't you proud of yourself?

Huh? Huh?

Good on you for running, once it got chilly here all my biking and walking got put in the closet to hibernate inside my warm jackets until spring.

I was about to say the same thing as the poster above - if you are building muscle you will change shape but might not lose weight, might even gain some!

The example of this that I keep in mind is a local athlete. She is tiny, but at competition fitness she weighs in at around 190 pounds. 190 pounds of muscle is much smaller than 190 pounds of fat!

But fat does keep you warm when it is freezing outside...

I live by the motto: You should NEVER weigh yourself!
It's all in the fitting of the clothes hon and clearly all that running is changing your shape....so who cares about the numbers?! And think how fit you are!
I have to confess to being like Rosie&James above. The bike is in hibernation ....and yes Rock Chef that layer of fat is helping to keep me warm....along with the central heating and thermal layers!
Good to have you back Jen,

I was thinking along the lines of the other poster. Muscle ways more than fat, so you should still be proud of yourself. A few years ago, I took a boot-camp class at the gym 4 days a week and I knew I was looking better, couldn't figure out why my scale wasn't showing the difference. But, now we both know!
I hate numbers and math too. Terrible things.

Yeah, if your pants aren't 'shrinking in the wash', then you're doing good.

Yeah, what they all said...

And can you convert those weather numbers into Canadian for me? All I know is that we're at like minus 50 with the windchill.

That's just not right.

Well then don't get a wii fit!!! It is a scale that talks to you.

Keep up the running. My wife wants me to to the "couch to 5K" program.

Rosie & James: I mean, I know this, but it's still disappointing. Thanks though! And, yes, I am proud of myself, but even more proud that I'm doing it for Team in Training.

Rock Chef: Thanks! I still have a lot more fat to lose, but it's coming off if even at a molasses snail pace. . . It will come off, but I just get frustrated now and again when the scale doesn't reflect my hard work.

Fi: I'm with you! Usually, I don't step onto a scale - I really don't like how a "NUMBER" can make you feel. That's why I avoid it. But since things have been fitting a wee bit different, I thought, "why not" and stepped onto that evil vile creature. I wish I hadn't. I'm bummed now.

And trust me, not all layers of fat are gone yet. They're still keeping me warm too!

Jest: Regardless, it's still frustrating, huh? You work so hard and the numbers don't reflect. . . I guess us women are more obsessed with the weight. (sigh) I never used to be. What happened?

I've always wanted to do one of those boot-camp things, but I'm so NOT a morning person. Early morning. . . forget it! I do this b/c it's for Team in Training - a cause bigger than me.

Ian: my pants are somewhat becoming bigger in the wash. . . .

Princess: b/c I heart you with all my Longhorn City-ness. . . Canadian cold = 22-degree F = 2.2-degree Celsius; which really feels like 17 F = -8.3 C. Holy buckets! I'm in the negatives when it comes to Canadian degrees! Aaaaaaaahck!

In Longhorn City speak your weather in Canada (-50 C) means that it's -58 F! Holy Gods That Be! That's FREEZING. I mean, can you even go outside? Gah!

G-man: you snuck in there. . . ! You can do a couch to 5K program NO PROBLEM! You can! Just do it right to avoid injury or too much too soon where you won't want to do it! We started with 2-mile runs for the first 4 weeks 4 times per week, which included the long run at 2-miles only. By the 3rd week, our long run was 4-miles!

See? No problem! YOU CAN DO IT! And, I bet after the first initial weeks of training, you'll also LOVE it!

ditto to what everyone else said. :)
I don't use the scales....not for years...why? For the reasons you mentioned- plus I'm just not in the right frame of mind to set myself up for failure any more. seriously.
I'm really impressed at your running program. wow gal!! awesomeness there....truely.THAT my dear one is the 'hard work' part...the scales...just more F**king numbers that we all hate...!
( well, except ETK..and math geeks don't count!)HA!!!! lol

Great job on the running! You would totally kick my bootie in a workout. I'd be lucky if I could run 2 miles right now. gaw!

Getting older is killer...isn't it.

Make sure you are feeding your metabolism! Smaller meals more frequently??? Like I need to tell you this...you're the one married to an MD. :)

I get it I get it!! It's a joke. "Anyone know a doctor?" Because your husband is a doctor, right? If I remember correctly. Anyway, it took me a second, but then I laughed. :)

Also . . . scales are dumb. Don't pay attention to them!

I couldn't WALK 2 miles four times a week let alone run it!! So you see? You are so much fitter than you think!
YAY Jen!

I've always wanted to train for a marathon but I simply can't stick to the training schedule or even GET started. So well done to you!

Ugh math!!!

TT: Yeah. I don't like how a number can make me feel. What keeps me going is the fact that I feel AWESOME! Regardless of whether or not my weight goes down on the scale, I feel really good again. That's motivation enough.

Alli: I'm amazed at how quickly I've gotten to where I am with mileage!? Just goes to show, if you do it right, you can accomplish just about anything! I do eat a lot more - just in smaller meals.

Trashman: It was cold, but not THAT cold, for sure!

Em: You cracked me up! And, yes, scales ARE dumb!

Fi: Thanks! But I do think and know for a fact you can and do walk 2-miles as well as more than that!

Sid: I used to be the same way and one day this past summer, I said I was going to do it. Now, I'm doing it & loving it at the same time. Thank you!

Suzel: I know! Stoopid math!
